Not the point at all, but I would have fucking cackled at the Morgan Freeman joke. Another reason I like you <3

Well, I hate that boring movie and all its boring songs too. Ugh. The Saccharine Sound of Music. And I agree with everything else you said so well and so , no, not cattily, but I am tired of the word humorously and don't think funnily is a word. But you are very funny in a nice sideways way. I read every word and will probably read it all again, for the pleasure of the way you expose things..And you are also furious in all the right places. So thank you for this, especially on the night of a day with more rotten news that I can't, or couldn't, otherwise have put aside, or at least aside enough to be able now to sleep. And I love Gavin Newsom.

Please write a book if you haven't already. I'd better check.

Thank you so much, Abby. Not everyone gets my sideways humor, but the fact that you do is really all I need. And hello? Thank you for understanding about The Sound of Music because that is the feeling I most recall as a kid - boredom. Is it the longest musical in history or do I just remember it that way? I’m going to have to look up the running time. I remember feeling like it went on for days. But anytime I have ever said that to anyone they look at me like I’ve just said I don’t like puppies or chocolate or rainbows. So now I feel seen and understood and maybe I will get some sleep, too. Thanks for being the best🤍

Oh and I did write a book, but not the one I wanted to write. I’m writing that one now.

Anyone that didn't laugh about the Morgan Freeman thing is broken. Love the essay and your humor. Keep the rebellion alive. With the sound of music of course.

Ha! Thank you, Melanie. Maybe Morgan Freeman is the litmus test. And we can keep the rebellion going with the sound of rage against the machine as we run through the hills? I could get down with that.

I am ALWAYS making a joke, even in the most tense moments, and if I don't even get a giggle out of someone, I know they are Not My People. I am glad Morgan Freeman was a nice dude. I would have been sad if he wasn't.

Everything is scary as hell. I hope Gavin Newsom leads the charge to finally get the Dems to throw down.

(my dad called it "The Sound of Mucus" LOL. I have a soft spot for it, but it is a bit cheesy)

Hahahaha. Sound of mucus. Ew but hahahha. And, I think I knew that about you. We’d probably be dangerous together because we’d be making these jokes at the wrong moment and my other problem is if I am with a friend and I think something is funny, I cannot not laugh. I mean this sincerely and it’s a little bit funny, but also there are times when I’ve been like, ok, but not *now* - surely now you can manage not to lose your shit because you are a grown adult and you have children and can possibly…

But no, I cannot. I’m useless. So don’t take me anywhere serious I guess. Or to any musicals. Hugs!!

Gently challenging, fiercely affirming and ‘practically perfect in every way’ - a tape measure to the day. Ally digs deep into her carpet bag on this one, to shine a light where darkness seeps and complicity pools. Thanks, from the other side of the pond, for this ray of sunshine. Hi Ally, thank you very much for another wonderful piece. I really don't know how we ended up here. I remember one of the things our parents wanted us to be is good people. I'm probably not as good as I should, but I think that there's worryingly large group of parents who don't want their kids to be good people, but they teach them to succeed no matter what it takes. I admit, I could use some more drive or ambition, because being good person isn't going to save one, but I still value the natural affinity for good.

I really hope we somehow get out of this mess.

Thank you for being here and writing.

All the best to you and your family. Namaste ❤️

I think one of the biggest problems here in the states is this "grab the brass rings" mentality we're fed as a way of being/succeeding, the "survival of the fittest" take on Darwin we're fed, and the constant messages about seeking happiness through external factors (big house, fast car, lots of money, etc) without much conversation about compassion, empathy or looking out for your neighbors (by and large). I just don't think a society works if you don't balance out the capitalism with a sense of responsibility for the people around you and a conversation about how good it feels to be part of something larger than just what you're trying to accomplish for yourself. Anyway, I agree, and I'm sending you and Anneke hugs.

When I was nine years old, my dad introduced me to the greatest musical of all time, “The Blues Brothers”.

My dad literally woke his sleeping daughter with “sshhhhh come watch TV with me don’t tell mom”, tiptoed me down the hallway, and thanks to (otherwise forbidden to me) HBO, introduced me to Jake and Elwood, Aretha Franklin, Matt Guitar Murphy, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, Blue Lou, and many more brilliant musicians. I don’t think we’ll ever again see a production that packs the kind of musical genius and power that The Blues Brothers gave us.

(An aside: Carrie Fisher gives her most captivating performance ever in this movie, and in that same scene, John Belushi stole my young heart with those eyes! You’ll know it when you see it)

(Another aside: “Don’t tell mom” was dad/kid-code for “this will be an adventure, and of course mom knows, but we all pretend mom doesn’t know because Dad and kid need their secrets)

Anyway, To this day, it remains my favorite musical/movie of all time., hands down! It’s also quite funny

If you haven’t seen The Blues Brothers, or haven’t seen it in a while, watch it tonight! Here’s one of my favorite scenes:

The Blues Brothers is a joyous gift, every single time!

BTW: My dad is awesome, Ally, my best friend. He can be a massive pain in the ass, but, he’s wise and silly and taught me so much; the gem from him that I treasure most is that “the adventure continues”. (A close second is that “there’s no good reason not to have fun doing whatever it is that you’re doing”. )

And, he loved my mom. More than that, he’s always said, “I really, really, like(d) her” (she died four years ago).

Dad gave me Jake and Elwood, and Harry Chapin, and a love of old, classic cars, and “ups and overs” in the surf, and playing hooky from school to go to lunch with him at The Cherry Blossom Inn restaurant, and a whole bunch of other dad-things.

But, with every adventure, or movie, or joke, or book, or sunset together, here is what my dad was really giving me: Because I am my father’s daughter, I believe, beyond question, that I am unique and valued and loved and protected. Which means I know what it looks like when any girl, any woman, does not understand the stunning miracle of her being and awe with which she deserves to be known. When I see a woman who doesn’t feel and believe in her own radiance, I might as well be seeing a woman without a nose; that’s how glaring and discordant it is to me.

Some things I osmosis-ed from my Dad are to right wrongs whenever we can, to reflect back to people the precious and beautiful things we see in them, and to make certain that if someone needs to be protected, we damn well protect them.

Ally, I know that one of the reasons I like to read what you write is because I have no doubt that my dad would like you very much. There’s a certain inevitability about you that reminds me a lot of my Dad🥰

Wow, I went super verbose! Sorry about that everyone. But not sorry enough to not send it….and copy it to send to my Dad)

Have a peaceful night, all

O M Goodness!!! "Don't get caught up in stereotypes", the stereotypical blond white Barbie tells us, and -look! - there are straight white males telling us we don't have to be perfect to be lovably feminine! Sure hope one of these good fellows will see his way to marrying my daughter even though she has really short hair and is pushing thirty.

You are hilarious, Ally, sideways or not, and people without a sense of humor are a menace and should be confined to their own laugh-less space. How dare they not snort at our irreverent jokes?

The plastic surgeon scheduled to perform a breast reduction and lift after my Lumpectomy next month stared at me with dead eyes when I said "Good riddance to under-boob sweat, right?" Naturally, I requested a different surgeon. Life's too precious to put up with that kind of asshole.

A stitch is when you post a video someone else made, but there's a video of you in the foreground responding to said video "in real time" and/or pausing the video to comment on what's being said, and/or commenting at the end with your own thoughts. I'd be pausing every three seconds with an expletive-heavy response to every one of these heinous creatures. The "sneaking" part was just sneaking my version into the school copies ;)

I'm a musical fan and haven't come across many I couldn't appreciate, but I'm totally cool with people who are wrong about that. 😅

There so much here, Ally, and so much <<out there>>, that I have a hard to responding to it all. Being the parent of teens and watching them watch this shitestorm unfold - gah!

The projected review of Smithsonian exhibits and how the current person in charge (I refuse to call him either a leader or a president) uses insanity like that to distract us from the real problems.

The gerrymandering of Texas and Newsom's response (Camille Zapata deserves the Nobel Prize!)

The invisible Democratic response to all of it.

That Prager U 6:50 of utter bullshit. "Be positive!"

I am not someone who typically rages, and I've been raging since November.

But I am ever so glad to have found you and promise to not yodel about goats if we ever meet in person.

p.s. Morgan Freeman!! 🩷

Hahahaha. See now, if we met in person and you yodeled about goats, I’d fall on the floor laughing. And yes to everything you said. I met one of my closest girlfriends for lunch today, she’s more like my sister (known her since Middle School) and a woman walked by in a PBS t-shirt and she burst into tears. It’s all just a lot right now. So many of us who care about this country and care about each other are hurting and scared and angry, but I think it helps so much to stick together and hold each other tight and also hold each other up when it gets to be too much. I’m really happy you’re here, Elizabeth. And I’m with you, Camille Zapata is giving me life 🙏🏼❤️‍🩹

Ally you always write about things I can relate to aside from the nightmare we are currently living in. The blood pressure cuff was moved from one arm to the other by a nurse a million years ago at my gynecologist’s office. I cracked a joke about what no blood in that arm and said something about being a vampire. She was not amused. I’m old and she was older so she is probably dead now. Anyway, I don’t like musicals either but I do like plays and strangely enough I am going to see live musicals in September and October. The first is in Florida with my husband and an older relative who watched Fox News and voted for our nightmare but has now seen the light because it affected her family. The second is in a very small town in my state of South Carolina with my very cool cousins that I collaborated with to write. We are hoping it will be educational as well as entertaining.

See I would have been laughing at your blood pressure joke, Mary. But I’m sure the nurses have heard it all and god knows they’re the best among us so I guess if they’re out of laughs here and there we forgive them lol. But fuck her too. Just kidding! Anyway, I’m always glad to hear when someone who voted for him now regrets it. I wish it wasn’t just because it affected her family adversely so now she sees the light or whatever but at this point in time I welcome anyone back to the awful reality we’re in if they’re willing to help try to get us out of it! Fox News should be charged with crimes against humanity IMO, they’ve destroyed families and undoubtedly cost us so many lives. I’m not saying we haven’t had totally skewed reporting on the liberal side of things, but there’s left-leaning, and there’s normalizing this man and his friends until we have no country left and no rule of law and people going to concentration camps. Though I am so relieved to see they are shutting down the despicable Alligator Alcatraz. Assholes. Anyway enjoy your musicals? I hope they’re great. I hope they’re like my experience watching Oklahoma and not my experience with SoM 🤣🙏🏼 Hugs and love xx

All of this. My god. I'm a little freaked out by the increasing divide in the country. Before, it was in churches and in people's homes--now it's being institutionalized. I imagine the kids with smart, kind parents telling their kids: No, that's not true, and how hard it will be for those kids to "fit in" (which I think we all want, esp when we're little). The video? BARFFFFFFF. “You don’t have to pretend to be the fierce independent woman.” I'm not pretending, motherfucker.

It’s unreal. From the party talking about woke ideology in the school system and how kids were being indoctrinated. This is just so sad and wrong. We really need a do-over. I sure hope we can make it happen. That video pissed me off, my god. I’d like to tell him where he can shove that smile.

That's one of the weirdest things to me. The projection. The claim that kids are being "indoctrinated" when THIS--THIS!--is genuine indoctrination. Also, yes, the smile thing. Jesus. Why don't *they* smile and "be nice" and "brighten up the world"? You probably saw when Brie Larson was criticized for not smiling in the Captain Marvel promos, so she photoshopped smiles onto a bunch of male superheroes. They looked like idiots.

Yes I do remember that. I was applauding from my living room. Fucking don’t tell girls and women to smile, don’t tell us how to feel in a world where we don’t even get to have bodily autonomy. Fuck off, I’ll smile if I feel like it.

I always nod my head and silently think “yes” when reading your posts —but the Morgan Freeman mural, that was/is hilarious. “Lol” should be removed from our collective brains, but I giggled out loud at the thought.

I once had an office directly above the Oscar Goodman campaign headquarters in Vegas in the early 2000s. No one ever ran against him so he would use his campaign monies to throw huge drunken parties while I pretended to enjoy working late to get ahead in my firm. One night, on my way down the elevator at say 7:30 PM, three Elvis impersonators and Oscar, holding a martini in one hand and a (thankfully) unlit cigar in the other got into the elevator. Strangely, despite the clear scent of alcohol in the elevator, none of the new occupants even said hello. I thought to make an Elvis specific joke but couldn’t think of anything before they got off. I wish I was as clever as you.
